It seems like online casinos that advertise their content using celebrities may be out of luck. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has announced that it is going to consider a ban on using public figures like celebrities when promoting online casino content.
Although the ban is not determined, there will be discussions happening on the 8th of May with stakeholders involved in the process. Essentially, the change will bring about a new way for how online casinos will advertise their content. This proposed ban will prohibit online casinos in Ontario from using celebrities and athletes in any kind of advertising or promotions. When it comes to athletes, the organization will also ban online casinos from using retired athletes.
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario seems to be setting very limiting restrictions. It will also ban the use of any symbols, cartoons, role models and influencers who may be of interest to individuals under the age of 18.
If the ban is established, the AGCO will give online casinos that utilize this method of marketing three months in order to transition successfully.
The question is, what pushed the AGCO to propose this celebrity ban? The organization’s main goal is always to maintain a safe iGaming environment in Ontario. The AGCO “has identified advertising and marketing approaches that strongly appeal to persons who are under the legal gaming age through the use of celebrities and/or athletes… concern regarding the potential harmful impact on the most vulnerable population, underage persons, remains high”. (AGCO, 2023)
We’ll have to wait until May 8th, 2023, to find out where this is going. Stay tuned.
